Today, we announced our Series B funding to support Ownwell’s next phase of growth. For us, this milestone marks something simple: we want to help more property owners.
When we started Ownwell, we saw millions of property owners paying their property tax bills, no questions asked. Many homeowners were unaware that property tax exemptions or appeals even existed, while others didn’t want to brave the bureaucratic processes. Appealing a tax assessment requires time, money, and expertise that most people don’t have.
The system was designed to benefit corporations and wealthy owners, those who had access to attorneys and tax consultants. Everyone else quietly overpaid more and more over time. Ownwell was founded to fix this, making the costs of real estate ownership clearer and more equitable for every property owner in the country.
In just the last five years, we’ve helped property owners save more than $400 million. Last year alone, we helped over 200,000 homeowners who had never appealed their property taxes before. These aren’t metrics to us; they represent real people keeping more of what they earn by only paying their fair share.
This new funding enables us to expand our organization’s impact nationwide and better support property owners in more ways. We’re building technology that makes property taxes simple, transparent, and equitable for all homeowners. To achieve this, we recognize property taxes, insurance premiums, and mortgage payments as the largest ‘subscriptions’ all homeowners have to pay each month. From that vantage point, we see a bigger opportunity to help people better understand and manage the true cost of owning property, across all expenses associated with their homes.
